Chasing the Wind (by Don Hiers.)

We live in a world filled with distractions and diversions and busyness and short attention spans and a constant craze for fun and entertainment. Many folks are sports fanatics or workaholics. Televisions, radios, computers, cell phones, and so forth take up an inordinate amount of our time.  The pride and pleasures of life dominate our thinking and our pursuits. It is easy for the Christian to get caught up in these habits and attitudes. Even when illness or death occurs in the family, often times we fill our lives with more work and more busyness, covering up the pain and suffering. The love/emotional bonds within a family can become a source of idol worship if God's Wisdom is ignored.

The greatest stumbling block to the follower of Christ is his leisure/free time. Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived, said that life on earth is basically all about 'chasing the wind'. In the carnal/fleshly/worldly realm, he said that everything is basically meaningless. One of his books, Ecclesiastes, says that nothing is truly new under the sun. Every generation thinks they 'know it all' and the young almost never give thought to the end of life and old age. Mind sets and attitudes never really change.

However, the Word of Truth has the answer/remedy for a busy and, often times, stressed out world. It's called 'being still' (being quiet and listening with our spiritual ears) and 'resting in the Lord' and 'waiting for Him' and finding the 'Peace of God'. Most of the time, this is the last thing we want to do but it is the way to have a healthier body, mind, and spirit; especially if we are hurting emotionally. Peace of mind and heart cannot be bought at any price. It is, however, freely given to anyone whose faith and hope is in the Lord!

Be still and rest in the Lord; wait for Him and patiently lean yourself upon Him...  Psalm 37:7  (amplified)

Be still, and know that I am God... Psalm 46:10

The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul who seeks Him... Lamentations 3:25

But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength... Isaiah 40:31

I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in His word I do hope...  Psalm 130:5

You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You...  Isaiah 26:3

Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid... John 14:27
